STEFAN BRÜGGEMANN AT PARKING

Parking presents Unleashed Speed/Unleashed Speech, an installation created especially for the Barcelona space dedicated to contemporary art located at the entrance to a car park.

Stefan Brüggemann (Mexico City, 1975) is an interdisciplinary artist who uses text as the basis for his work. Through media as diverse as painting, sculpture, installations or video, and drawing on elements of conceptual art, minimalism and Pop Art, Brüggemann investigates the function of language in our society and its limits as an artistic element.

In this new installation, the main wall of Parking is covered with silver leaf, applied irregularly to accentuate the gesture and create a subtle texture. The central part of the work is occupied by one of his famous vinyl text pieces, which reads: Unleashed Speed / Unleashed Speech. Finally, on top of the vinyl, there are two neon signs that read Speed / Speech. All these elements, which are recurrent in Brüggemann’s imagery, unleash a torrent of references ranging from conceptual art to informalism, including Nauman, Kounellis, Kosuth and Stingel.

With this new piece, Brüggemann exposes us to the problematics and trends of contemporary Western life. The fast pace of life, the culture of immediacy, the spread of previously silenced discourses or the role of the media and social networks, are just some of the ideas that emerge before the viewer. But, as is usual in his work, it is not only the text that suggests ideas and concepts. The use of silver, a material associated with power and luxury, and neon lights, which add more noise to an environment already saturated with information and visual stimuli, are not random or purely aesthetic choices, but quite the opposite.

Brüggemann’s work has been exhibited internationally in renowned institutions and art galleries, such as the Kunsthalle Bern (Switzerland), the Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris, France), the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago (USA) and the CGAC in Santiago de Compostela (Spain).
